Newsletter July 2011

"Dear Readers, shalom!

I would like to thank all the Library staff and readers who played a part in the success of our ‘Voice in the Dark’ experience which was held in a number of shopping malls around the country. The activity contributed greatly to the awareness of citizens and government representatives that it is important for literature to be accessible to people with disabilities.
I invite all of you to continue to support the Library campaign: you can send a text message with the number 10 to the number 9555 to donate 10 shekels, and visit the Central Library for the Blind page on Facebook. We need your support! The campaign is valid until 15 July 2011.

Yoav Hepher, CEO
The Central Library for the Blind

On 6 July, in conjunction with the publishers Gap Educational Products, there will be a book-launching of 12 Wonderful Composers by Yaacov Mishori. In April we sent the Braille version of the book to children and youth members of the Library and to subscribers with young children and grandchildren. The book presents the essentials of classical music as an interactive experience. Each chapter is dedicated to a different composer, and the children are invited to press the appropriate key on the side panel to listen to a short piece of music written by that composer. The event will take place in the event hall of the Cultural Center, in the presence of Maestro Zubin Mehta and other dignitaries. Entry will be by invitation only.

The ‘Step Hear’ system has been installed in the Tel Aviv branch of the Library. The system enables people with the appropriate bracelet to receive an indication at the entrance to the building that the system is installed. Clicking on the bracelet activates a recording that describes the space that the blind person is in, and the way to reach the Library from there. One unit is situated on the ground floor outside the main door, and another is placed on the first floor outside the Library door."
